RJ11 is the US Standard for wired telephone services. However, every major telephone company that has a POTS? system is dismantling it, and will no longer offer POTS phone services. Verizon is the local POTS phone company in Allegheny County, and they are not taking new customers, and if a customer moves, they will not provide POTS phone services at the new address. If you want home telephone through Verizon, you would have to connect your telephone line with their FiOS? modem which will connect your phone line to the internet. In new construction/renovation – there is no need for the RJ11 line. There is no way to predict where a telephone line will be needed, and therefore more telephone jacks than necessary will be done.
Since Verizon will offer telephone over their FiOS network, it makes sense to pick a cheaper provider for VOIP? solutions. With VOIP, there are multiple options. One could acquire a Wifi? Phone which will use the wifi access point to carry the calls. There are also ATA?s. Some requires you to configure them, and others will work with a particular service provider. Both of the solutions are preferable over Verizon’s FiOS Telephone service. With an ATA, you connect the phone to the ATA, and the ATA to the RJ45 jack. Assuming everything is properly configured, you would have active service.
With that said, there is no need, nor will it make financial sense to install RJ11 jacks in the residence. Most people have cellular phones, and I am an outlier for having a home telephone service. But even so, there is no need to have a home telephone line since I have a cellular line. Having a home telephone line just makes sense for my needs and wants. As you can see, I don’t need telephone jacks since the VOIP solutions eliminates the need for an RJ11 jack. Also, if I was to decide that I don’t want a home telephone line, there are no wasted RJ11 jacks that would not be used.
